AT&T Edge Cloud Strategy and OpenStack’s Role In It
AT&T is using OpenStack in AT&T Integrated Cloud to run Virtual Network Functions in Data Centers and Central Offices. The advent of IOT, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), autonomous cars and 5G applications will demand massive amounts of near-real time computation closer to the user. AT&T’s Domain 2.0 is evolving to support Edge Cloud by moving compute closer to the user. Edge Cloud brings up more use cases to OpenStack such as increased scale (locations), economical in smaller compute deployments, Zero touch provisioning, support for specialized hardware (example GPU), etc., We have explored several architecture options to run OpenStack at the Edge, including running OpenStack in containers, regional deployments, etc. In this talk, we will share our insights on of deploying OpenStack at the edge, further enhancements needed in OpenStack and a demo illustrating the tools sets that AT&T is contributing to Open Source to head start the industry on Edge.
